Statistics of two-particle dispersion in two-dimensional turbulence

چکیده
We investigate Lagrangian relative dispersion in direct numerical simulation of two-dimensional inverse cascade turbulence. The analysis is performed by using both standard fixed time statistics and an exit time approach. The latter allows a more precise determination of the Richardson constant which is found to be g.4 with a possible weak finite-size dependence. Our results show only small deviations with respect to the original Richardson’s description in terms of diffusion equation. These deviations are associated with the long-range correlated nature of the particles’ relative motion. The correlation, or persistence, parameter is measured by means of a Lagrangian ‘‘turning point’’ statistics. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1498121#

Taylor particle dispersion during transition to fully developed two-dimensional turbulence.
We report new measurements of single particle dispersion in turbulent two-dimensional (2D) flows. Laboratory experiments in electromagnetically driven and Faraday wave driven turbulence reveal a transition from weakly dispersing superdiffusive regime to strongly dispersing Brownian diffusion as the flow energy is increased in a broad range. The transition to fully developed 2D turbulence is cha...
متن کاملModeling droplet dispersion and interphase turbulent kinetic energy transfer using a new dual-timescale Langevin model
Dispersion of spray droplets and the modulation of turbulence in the ambient gas by the dispersing droplets are two coupled phenomena that are closely linked to the evolution of global spray characteristics, such as the spreading rate of the spray and the spray cone angle. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent gas flows laden with sub-Kolmogorov size particles, in the absence of gravi...
متن کاملLagrangian scale of particle dispersion in turbulence.
Transport of mass, heat and momentum in turbulent flows by far exceeds that in stable laminar fluid motions. As turbulence is a state of a flow dominated by a hierarchy of scales, it is not clear which of these scales mostly affects particle dispersion. Also, it is not uncommon that turbulence coexists with coherent vortices. Here we report on Lagrangian statistics in laboratory two-dimensional...
متن کاملDispersion and mixing in quasigeostrophic turbulence.
The dynamics of passive Lagrangian tracers in three-dimensional quasigeostrophic turbulence is studied numerically and compared with the behavior of two-dimensional barotropic turbulence. Despite the different Eulerian properties of the two flows, the Lagrangian dynamics of passively advected tracers in three-dimensional quasigeostrophic turbulence is very similar to that of barotropic turbulen...
متن کاملTwo-dimensional Simulation of Mass Transfer and Nano-Particle Deposition of Cigarette Smoke in a Human Airway
The chance of developing lung cancer is increased through being exposed to cigarette smoke illustrated by studies. It is vital to understand the development of particular histologic-type cancers regarding the deposition of carcinogenic particles, which are present in human airway. In this paper, the mass transfer and deposition of cigarette smoke, inside the human airway, are investigated apply...
